SPRING DETOX…Time to clean up your act!

Detoxification is something of a buzzword and it seems to pop up more at this time of year when we are coming out of winter and are feeling the energy of springtime and the promise of summer.
We feel less like hibernating and more like taking stock and getting ready to put our best foot forward, clean out the cupboards (literally, in some cases!), throw out the things that no longer serve us and embed new ones.
There is a lot of literature and articles on the internet about detoxification that it can seem confusing to know what is the best one to choose.
Firstly we need to sort out the “why” – why am I doing a detox? Without a good motivation it is much harder to succeed.
Let’s establish something here – all of us living in industrialised society are exposed to pollutants and toxins, which, depending on who you are, affect us in different ways. Some people are less susceptible to complications from toxic exposure than others. And “ toxins “ is a very over-used term which basically refers to anything that shouldn’t be in our bodies, something detrimental to health.
Where and what are these toxins? They can be in the air we breathe, the water that we drink, the foods we eat, the things we touch. They can come from air and water polluted by industry and manufacturing, paint fumes, gardening materials, pesticide and herbicide residue on our food, chemicals added to processed food, cleaning agents, or laundry chemical residue left on our clothes and bedding.
What can exposure to toxins do? Here’s a list, some may apply to you, others not at all:
Headaches
Vague feelings of unspecific general unwellness
Digestive problems, eg, irritable bowel and acid reflux.
Joint inflammation and stiffness and muscle aches and pains; back pain.
Nervous system disorders – eg anxiety and depression, poor sleep.
Low testosterone in men.
Unexplained weight gain.
Low libido.
Wow, where to start?!
Well, it can look overwhelming, and so it helps to talk to a trained naturopath who can see the wood for the trees and design the right type of detox for you, one that will not make you ill on the path to better health. There are many types of detox and sometimes more than one will be necessary, just not all at the same time.
